How can online games be more important than family?
I haven’t heard (email or phone call) from a middle-aged relative in some time. I called to check and she said she’s too busy playing online games to read her email anymore. It’s like she’s putting the importance of these silly games ahead of her family. Seems to me email should be the first thing checked when going online; there may be some important message – games can be played anytime.
If she is generally anti-social, or just not particularly sociable, then the problem is on her end. Its easier to socialize through games since you don’t have to meet in person, and one doesn’t need to show their true selves.
If her family in general isn’t very sociable, or not very sociable with her, then maybe she feels somewhat rejected and finds more consistency with her online gaming life than with a family that she doesn’t see as much.
But, the other side of this is that online games can be addicting. They are easy to play, fun, and are designed to promote constant playing. You’d have to play these games to truly understand it, but the most addictive online games involve controlling an in-game character that grows and develops throughout the game. Achieving various goals in the game improves the character and makes the character capable of doing more things. Since designers constantly upgrade and add on new tasks, abilities, challenges, tools, etc to the game, players hardly ever run out of things they can do to advance themselves in the game. This kind of design can make it difficult to stop because there’s the feeling of being able to do “just one more” thing before signing off.
